The Ponte Vedra Beach area has been inhabited for much of the past millennium. Prior to European settlement, this part of Florida’s Atlantic coast was inhabited by a succession of Native American cultures. It was one of the first places to welcome Spanish explorers and is relatively close to the historic St. Augustine settlement.
The Ponte Vedra Beach area has been permanently inhabited since the late 19th century. During that time, it served as an important mining settlement and hosted a prominent extraction firm owned by the legendary Henry Holland Buckman. Since the middle of the 20th century, Ponte Vedra Beach has been known as a top destination for vacation home owners and snowbirds.

Ponte Vedra Beach is located in the northeastern corner of St. Johns County. The community stretches for several miles along the Atlantic coast and features an unusual, oblong shape that achieves maximal frontage on the shoreline’s wide beaches. Although the bulk of Ponte Vedra Beach is fully developed, the community does have a number of protected wetlands and dune systems that harbor migratory waterfowl, reptiles and fish in impressive numbers.
Further inland, larger areas of contiguous wilderness line the St. Johns River’s basin. Major thoroughfares in the area include Florida Highways A1A and 202.
Population and Demographics
According to the most recently available Census data, Ponte Vedra Beach has a year-round population of about 30,000. However, the community is also home to thousands of seasonal residents, many of whom have permanent residences in other parts of the country.
Many Ponte Vedra Beach residents work in the seasonal tourism industry. Others are retired or semi-retired and lead lives of leisure. Those who do work full-time typically commute to Jacksonville or to the commercial strip near Highway A1A.
