Middleburg, FL Air Conditioning Repair & Service
Middleburg, FL History
Although the area was a rich hunting and fishing ground before the arrival of European settlers, Middleburg has only been permanently settled since the 19th century. The community played an important role in the Seminole Wars of the mid-19th century and later grew into a small but crucial trading post along the St. Johns River floodplain.
During the 20th century, Middleburg became known as a cheap, convenient bedroom suburb of Jacksonville, attracting snowbirds from other parts of the U.S. Although it remains unincorporated, it’s now a flourishing community with its own high school and civic assets.
Middleburg, FL Geography
Middleburg is located in Clay County, FL. It lies about 25 miles southwest of downtown Jacksonville and boasts easy access to the rest of Florida via thoroughfares like U.S. Highway 301 and Florida Highway 15. Much of the land on which Middleburg sits is a flat, marshy expanse that includes several tributaries of the St. Johns River. The area is heavily forested and boasts an impressive range of plants and animals. Middleburg itself features low-density residential developments and a few commercial outposts.
Population and Demographics
According to the most recently available Census figures, Middleburg has a population of between 10,000 and 15,000. Part of the uncertainty of local population counts lies in the confusion about the proper boundaries of this unincorporated community as well as the fact that it continues to grow rapidly. Many Middleburg residents are retirees or empty-nesters who have relocated to the area from other parts of the country or world. Others work full-time in the tourism industry. The proportion of school-age children here is below the national average.
Things to Do in Middleburg, FL
There’s plenty to do in the Middleburg area. Outdoorsy types love the proximity of Jennings State Forest, a well-preserved area with a variety of ecosystems. Boaters and fishermen can easily access the lazily flowing St. Johns River. To the north, the Orange Park Mall serves as a magnet for shoppers and fashionistas from around the region. Meanwhile, the Jacksonville Landing development caters to those with discerning tastes. Hunters enjoy the incredible biodiversity at nearby Bayard Conservation Area.
Climate and Weather
Like much of the rest of northern Florida, Middleburg has a subtropical climate that’s marked by hot, humid summers, generally pleasant transitional seasons and mild but unpredictable winters. Between May and September, it’s not unusual for daytime temperatures to remain above 90 degrees for weeks on end. Although tropical storm strikes are rare, such events become more likely during the early fall. The growing season typically lasts for about 10 months, but hard frosts and freezes can seriously affect crops during the dead of winter.
