What is an Energy Star Home Performance Evaluation?
An Energy Star Home Performance Evaluation is a whole-house assessment of energy consumption and energy loss. A professional auditor is trained in building sciences and certified by an Energy Star approved program to perform energy evaluations for homeowners. An energy evaluation will identify areas of the home that should be upgraded to improve energy efficiency.
What is an Energy Audit?
Home performance assessments, also known as energy audits, examine the use of energy in the home and recommend ways to reduce energy consumption. The Energy Star Home Performance Evaluation utilizes a whole-home approach in the evaluation. The whole-home approach assesses:
- Heating and Cooling System
- Ventilation System
- Water Heater
- Appliances and Electronics
- Insulation and Your Home’s Envelope
- Your Energy Bills
The Energy Star Home Performance Evaluation program standardizes the assessment process, and trains and certifies technicians to perform the energy audits.
How Does the Energy Auditor Assess My Home?
The energy auditor uses special tools and methods to test the seal of your home’s envelopes. The auditor may use equipment such as blower doors and thermographic imaging to identify points of heat loss around your home. Many homes have cracks around the doors and windows. Air often escapes through seams behind the baseboards. The auditor will find places where your home is leaking heat and cooled air. Once these areas are identified, it is important that you seal up the cracks. The auditor may also find that your insulation is below the recommended R-Values. Simply improving your home’s envelope by upgrading your insulation and sealing cracks can save as much as 20 percent on your energy costs.
The energy auditor will also discuss factors about your family and lifestyle, such as how many people live in your household and the average thermostat settings during the heating and cooling seasons. Before the scheduled audit, gather at least 12 months of energy bills. The utility company will provide you with a summary or you may be able to access your bills online if you have not saved the mailed bills. The auditor will review your utility bills with you.

Take action to improve or upgrade the recommended items to save hundreds of dollars per year on energy expenses.
