6 Tips for Keeping Your Home Safe While You’re Away During the Holidays
The holiday season is all about reconnecting with friends and family and building new memories with those closest to you. If your holiday plans include a getaway to visit loved ones, keeping your home safe while you’re traveling is a major concern. Avoid property loss or damage and protect your valuables by following these tips.
Turn to Your Neighbors
Keeping your home safe while you’re traveling is easy with a little help from trustworthy neighbors. Ask them to keep an eye out for strange activity, and have them pick up your mail so it doesn’t pile up. Bonus points if they can keep one of their vehicles parked in your driveway to make it look as though you’re coming and going.
Use a Timer
Invest in a few light timers and place them throughout your home. Set the timers to turn lights off and on at various times to give the illusion of occupancy.
Look After the HVAC System
Schedule annual preventive maintenance to avoid a system failure or malfunction while you’re traveling. Your contractor will clean, tune and lubricate the heating system, helping to save energy, prolong the life of your equipment, and ensure reliable service throughout the season.
Adjust the Thermostat
Once indoor temperatures dip below 50 degrees, you run the risk of frozen pipes. Set the programmable thermostat somewhere between 50 and 60 degrees, using the “hold” or “vacation” setting to keep it at one constant temperature.
Avoid broadcasting your vacation plans online, and wait until you get home to post holiday photos.
Turn Off the Water
Avoid a plumbing disaster by shutting off the main water valve and insulating pipes that pass through cold zones, including crawl spaces and the attic.
Power Down Appliances
Unplug small appliances and plug pricey electronics in to a surge protector placed in the “off” position.
