How to Keep Your Home Toasty on Winter’s Coldest Days
Unusually low temperatures can test your patience while affecting your comfort levels. However, you can take some steps to ensure that when an icy weather pattern sets in you will enjoy optimum home heating performance from your HVAC equipment. While some steps for enhanced comfort control are as simple as basic home improvement, others may require you to research indoor air quality solutions that will complement the performance of your heat pump or furnace.
Moisture Control and Winter Temperatures
Given the typical humidity issues of a Florida summer, you may find it odd that a humidifier can help with your home heating levels. However, cold air is only able to hold half as much moisture as warm air, meaning that humidity levels inside and out are lower during the winter. Just as humidity makes you feel warmer in the summer, it can provide the same effect in the winter. When indoor humidity levels are lower, your heating setting may need to be higher to provide the comfort level desired.
Recommended indoor humidity throughout the year is between 30 and 50 percent. Installation of humidifiers to coordinate with your heating system can introduce enough moisture into your indoor airstream to combat low humidity. At the same time, your heating setting can be reduced without comfort being affected. Every degree can make as much as a one-percent difference on your heating bill when that change is maintained for at least eight hours.
An added benefit of using humidifiers to combat low humidity is the impact on your skin and mucous membranes. The mucous membranes provide a defense against germs, and when your indoor humidity drops below 15 percent, you can be more vulnerable to infections like colds and flu. Maintaining a good balance in your home can make a big difference in your family’s wellbeing.
It’s important to evaluate your home for leaks and drafts prior to winter’s onset. During chilly weather, however, you may notice new drafts. Keep an extra supply of caulk and weather stripping on hand to fix these issues as they are noted. If you haven’t done any air sealing in the past, it’s helpful to know that a combination of sealing leaks and supplementing your insulation could provide up to 10 percent in savings while keeping your home toasty and comfortable throughout the winter.
Optimized Home Heating
The value of annual heater maintenance can’t be emphasized enough. If you allow a professional to inspect and service your heating equipment prior to the arrival of winter, you can benefit from better performance and minimized energy bills. The safety value of the service is also critical as heating is the second leading cause of house fires.
