Federal 25C Tax Credits Make that HVAC Upgrade Affordable
With the newly reinstated Federal 25C Tax Credits, it’s much more affordable to obtain an energy efficient home improvement or an HVAC upgrade. President Obama has signed new legislation to extend tax credits through 2013 for specific home upgrades. Upgrades include windows, doors, insulation, hot water equipment or a new HVAC system. Homeowners can claim up to $500 for these improvements. Although the total limit is $500, each home improvement has its own specific cap.
An Outline of the Federal 25C Tax Credits for 2013
High energy efficient central air conditioners, and hot water heaters are eligible for a tax credit up to $300. If you install energy efficient furnaces or hot water boilers, you’re eligible for up to $150 of the cost for installation. Advanced main circulating fans qualify for up to a $150 tax credit. Here’s a guideline to the specific energy efficiency ratings that HVAC equipment must meet or exceed:
- Boilers and Furnaces: Oil, natural gas and propane hot water boilers must have a minimum of 95 AFUE. Oil, natural gas and propane furnaces must meet the same requirement.
- Pump Units: Air source heat pumps must have 15 SEER, 12.5 EER and 8.5 HSPF. If the heat pump system is packaged, the requirements for the tax credit are 14 SEER, 12 EER and 8 HSPF.
- Central Air Conditioner Systems: Split system central air conditioners must meet or exceed 16 SEER and 13 EER. For packaged central air conditioner systems, units must have a minimum of 14 SEER and 12 EER.
- Fan: The advanced circulating fan must use no more than two percent of the furnace’s total energy. It is a 10 percent rebate, and both furnace and fan must qualify.
Consumers can file for the tax credits in Jacksonville, FL by filing the Form 5695 and sending in the manufacturer’s certification statement of energy efficiency. The reinstated Federal 25C Credits are allowing consumers a way to save money along with leaving less of an environmental impact on the planet.
