Common AC Problems and How to Handle Them
The cooling season in Orange Park is long and hot, and common A/C problems are likely to occur later in the summer, especially if you didn’t have the system tuned up in the spring. Annual preventive maintenance goes a long way toward preventing these common problems that can leave you sweltering in the heat and humidity.
- Clogged condensate drain – When the humidity is high, moisture in the air flowing over the evaporator coil condenses, drips into the condensate pan below and drains through the attached tubing. If the pan’s drain or the drain tube becomes clogged, water will back up in the pan and shut down the system. Turn off the power to the air conditioner, empty the condensate pan, and find and remove the obstruction. During your annual tune-up, the technician will clean and flush the condensate drain to prevent this problem.
- Dirty air filter – Many common A/C problems are caused by a dirty air filter. The filter prevents dust from entering the system and ensures optimum airflow to the air conditioner. A dirty filter restricts airflow, which can cause overheating and related damage. Check the air filter monthly. When it’s caked with dust, replace it with a clean one to ensure proper airflow and system protection.
- Electric control failure – The air conditioner cycles many times every day throughout the cooling season, and over time, electric controls may wear out. If any component of the air conditioner suddenly stops working, you may have an electric control problem, which will need to be identified and fixed by an HVAC professional. An annual tune-up will include testing the electric controls to help prevent this common problem.
- Frozen evaporator coil – If the system is low on refrigerant or the airflow is restricted, the evaporator coil may freeze up and the system may shut down. To prevent this problem, a tune-up will include measuring the airflow and the refrigerant level and removing obstructions or topping off your system with refrigerant.
