5 Common HVAC Terms
To communicate well with your HVAC technician and maintain your system properly, you need to know the most common HVAC terms. That way, you can understand whether a problem is serious or not, prevent inconvenient, expensive breakdowns, and keep your Orange Park, Florida, home comfortable. Here are some of the most common heating and air conditioning terms.
The SEER, or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, of your air conditioner or heat pump is the cooling output during a typical summer divided by the amount of electricity it uses. More efficient systems have a higher SEER rating.
MERV, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, is an efficiency rating for air filters. Filters with higher ratings catch more contaminants like dust, dirt, pollen, and mold. However, they also use more power. Ask an experienced professional which filter and MERV rating is best for your home.
Your condenser coil is part of your air conditioner or heat pump’s outdoor unit, and it cools your home by releasing heat into the outdoor air. This happens when refrigerant condenses from a warm gas to a cold liquid. At the same time, a fan blows air over the coil to disperse heat faster.
Your evaporator coil is inside your system’s indoor air handler. Your HVAC system sends liquid refrigerant from your condenser coil to your evaporator coil through an aluminum or copper tube. Then, a series of small nozzles or expansion valves spray the refrigerant so it can evaporate easily. This absorbs heat and lowers the temperature of your home.
Your compressor moves refrigerant through the refrigeration cycle. Before the refrigerant reaches your condenser, the compressor compresses it from a gas to a liquid. This is one of the most expensive parts of most HVAC systems, so many people go ahead and have a new system installed if the compressor breaks.
